Come learn more about the spectrum of career opportunities in healthcare from Rod O’Connell, Strategist Talent Acquisition and Retention at Island Health.

Island Health is the largest and most diverse employer on Vancouver Island with more than 20,700 employees working in 900 different types of jobs including nursing, paramedical professionals and a wide variety of support positions.

Rod O'Connell has been working in the healthcare industry since 1983 when he graduated with a diploma in Nursing in Kamloops, B.C. and went on to get his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Victoria in 1987.  Rod has worked as an acute care nurse in hospitals in Kamloops and Victoria.  In 1989 he moved into Nursing Management overseeing several clinical units and outpatient programs in Victoria until 2001 when he made a move to Human Resources for the then Capital Health Region.

He has worked for the last 16 years in a number of Island Health Human Resources roles including:  Manager, Employment Services, Director of Recruitment and Retention and for the last six years he has taken on the role of Strategist, Talent Acquisition & Retention.  During his time with Island Health HR he has overseen a number of strategic recruitment and retention initiatives including leading the award winning Island health Aboriginal Employment Program.

Rod brings a passion for creating new and innovative recruitment and retention initiatives and in his current role is responsible for developing strategies to ensure the Island Health remains competitive in the healthcare labor market.
