Camosun postpones S’TENISTOLW Indigenous Adult & Post-Secondary Education Conference
From: John Boraas, Vice President, Education
It is with great regret that the college has made the difficult decision to postpone the 2020 S’TENISTOLW Indigenous Adult and Post-Secondary Education Conference for one year to August 24- 27, 2021.
I want to say a sincere thank you to the conference planning faculty, staff and others in Eyēʔ Sqȃ’lewen - The Centre for Indigenous Education & Community Connections, who have been working so diligently together for many months to organize such an incredible gathering of minds and hearts to discuss Indigenous education. The conference is nationally renowned and I know much anticipated by community leaders, scholars and Indigenous education allies across the country and around the world.
This decision was made after event staff received generous feedback through a survey to our conference attendees. Respondents overwhelmingly expressed preference for a one-year postponement which accorded with our own projections to ensure that our conference could proceed as intended in a good way. It was critical to us that our decision-making process reflected their perspectives and needs.
I echo the sentiments of our conference organizers - in these extraordinary times we have gained a new perspective on our conference theme of ‘Where the Waters Meet.’ Within our college and our communities we have seen profound acts of love, compassion, courage and solidarity. We have remembered the value of togetherness and family, and how as individuals we are still all so interconnected. Now, as ever, we need all forms of connection and transformation that our local waterways and oceans represent.
Camosun College and Eyēʔ Sqȃ’lewen, along with our local co-host Songhees Nation, are looking forward to warmly welcoming our colleagues and friends to these territories in the summer of 2021.
