Prenatal and Parenting

What's Best for Baby checklist

Prenatal

Prenatal classes help parents make informed choices by providing education regarding pregnancy, labour, and birth. We support clients of midwives and physicians. Our instructors are nurses with specializations in lactation, childbirth, prenatal and post-natal care.

Classes are taught in the newly renovated room at Victoria General Hospital and include a hospital tour led by the instructor. We teach stages of pregnancy, stages of labour, preparing for labour and delivery including labour techniques, interventions and options during labour and delivery, and caring for mom and baby.

What to bring to class:

  • Baby's Best Chance (free from public health offices)
  • Two pillows and one blanket
  • Clothing suitable for floor exercises
  • Change for parking ($2.50 per 2 hours, subject to change)
  • Food and drinks for day-long classes
Fee includes mother and partner.

Prenatal - Evening

This 12 hour course is offered over 4 evenings 6-9pm or 6 evenings 7-9pm at Victoria General Hospital.  All classes are held in the VGH Lecture Hall (located across the hall from Tim Horton's.)

Prenatal in a Weekend

This 12 hour course is offered in one weekend at Victoria General Hospital.  All classes are held in the VGH Lecture Hall (located across the hall from Tim Horton's.)

Prenatal in One Day

This 6.5 hour condensed version is for people with time and schedule constraints or a refresher for people who have had a child before. Highlights include: labour and birth; coping skills; role of the birth partner; and, what to expect following delivery. Victoria General Hospital.  All classes are held in the VGH Lecture Hall (located across the hall from Tim Horton's.)

Prenatal Preparation: Acupressure for Labour New

Join Stephanie Curran, a Registered Acupuncturist, to learn how acupressure to specific points on the body can help reduce the pain of contractions and help support a woman throughout her labour. This class will be hands-on and a handout will be provided for easy reference and practice at home. Bring your labour support person, a friend or come learn for yourself! Fees include Mother and birth coach.

Parenting

Post Partum Support - online New

Up to 20% of mothers will develop post partum depression in the first 6 months after delivery. Even if you do not think you or your partner will develop post partum depression, this course will provide you with tools for staying positive, setting goals and learning important tools for self – care. 

This unique online course, facilitated by a Registered Clinical Counsellor and experienced educator, includes handouts, discussions, and a weekly  ‘real-time’ chat forum to guide you in a supportive environment. You will receive one month of online access and support to learn: 
  • a) What postpartum depression/anxiety is and is not;
  • b) Signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety;
  • c) Treatment options;
  • d) What you can do to take care of yourself (and what your partner can do); and
  • e) How to prevent relapse

  • This course is priced equivalent to a typical one-hour office appointment with a Counsellor. New parents can ask questions about the emotions they are experiencing in a supportive environment. We recommend that you take this course anytime between late pregnancy and the first six months after delivery.

    Baby Care

    Be prepared by learning skills and strategies for coming home with your newborn. Topics: diapering, bathing and feeding; coping with visitors; illnesses; relationships; and what baby’s crying really means. A qualified childbirth educator will guide you through the steps to successful early parenting. Please bring diapers, (disposable or cloth) baby clothing, change for parking, 2 pens and paper. Fee includes mother and partner.

    Save a Child

    This program is designed for new or returning parents/grandparents or babysitters of children – newborn-8 years. We will discuss how to prevent childhood emergencies and you will learn what you can do when an emergency or the unexpected happens. Topics include first aid for shock and unconsciousness, choking, CPR for infants and children, wounds, bleeding, burns, poisoning, convulsions and seizures. Course fee is per student.
