American Sign Language

American Sign Language (ASL) certification complements other credentials such as Community Support Workers, Educational Assistants, Child and Youth Care Workers, Early Childhood Educators, and others who work with individuals who are deaf or hearing impaired.

Beginning in January 2012, Camosun will offer the provincially recognized ASL Prep and Basic certification, pending approval from Camosun’s Education Council (status pending at time of print). This program is taught via immersion by an instructor who is deaf, and includes insight into the deaf culture and working with children and families of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. The program is comprised of two levels of certification:

  • Prep 1 (30 hours)
  • Prep 2 (30 hours)
  • Prep 3 (30 hours)
  • Prep 4 (30 hours)
  • Mastery Exam -> Certificate in ASL - Prep*
  • Basic 1 (30 hours)
  • Basic 2 (30 hours)
  • Basic 3 (30 hours)
  • Basic 4 (30 hours)
  • Mastery Exam -> Certificate in ASL - Basic*

  • *Camosun Certification pending approval, anticipated Dec 2011

There is an early exit point following completion of the Prep level. Students are encouraged to complete the Basic level to acquire a functional use of the ASL language. Students who wish to deepen their skills may pursue further studies.

In order to meet the high demand for this program, we are offering Prep 1 and Prep 2 through Continuing Education beginning in January. There are no admission requirements for Prep 1 so you may register at anytime. If you have completed Prep 1 at a recognized institution (using the VISTA curriculum) within the last 2 years, you may register directly into Prep 2. Please refer to our refund policy when selecting your courses.

After you have successfully completed Prep 1 and 2, you will be invited to apply to the American Sign Language Certificate Program and continue towards the Prep and Basic levels of certification.

Please see http://camosun.ca/ce/ or contact us at 250-370-4578 or cectinfo@camosun.bc.ca for more information and for updates as we complete our approval process.
