Camosun College offers a wide-range of Occupational Safety courses for workers and safety committee members. Do you have employees or an organization that requires OHS training? Let us set up a course to meet your specific company’s or agency’s needs. Daytime, evening, or weekend workshops can be arranged and may be delivered at either your worksite or at College facilities. Occupational First Aid Level 1

This 8 hour WCB recognized course covers the essential ABC's - airway, breathing and circulation. Students learn how to deal with obstructed airways and breathing distress, control bleeding, perform CPR, care for minor wounds, and how to complete basic records and reports. Includes using an automated exterior defibrillator (AED).  A 3 year certificate will be issued upon successful completion. Pre-requisites: Students must be at least 16 years of age. Bring government issued photo ID to class to present to instructor.

Firearms First Aid Course New

Do you use or spend time around firearms?  Learn what to do in case the worst happens on the range or when hunting in the bush.  This course includes a Red Cross Emergency First Aid & CPR certificate, and covers additional firearms related injuries.  Course is open to anyone but those under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Traveler's Safety Awareness Course New

Whether you are planning a trip to a remote overseas destination or simply visiting friends in a strange city for the first time, this course will build your confidence by showing you the basics of how to stay safe while traveling. Back Care & Ergonomics

Does your working environment require you to lift heavy objects, bend frequently, or sit at a desk for extended periods of time? Learn how you can protect your back and prevent other musculoskeletal injuries. Topics include: lifting safely and reducing risks of back injury; using equipment and tools to help do the work; preventing sprains and strains; risk factors for musculoskeletal injuries (MSI); and how to improve posture and reduce stress on your body. For workers, supervisors, and anyone concerned with ergonomics and preventative care.

Responsibilities of Joint H&S Committees

Of interest to those on or new to Safety Committees as well as supervisors and others interested in work safety issues. Learn to identify and create an effective Occupational Health & Safety program for your workplace. This course covers: your responsibilities as a committee member; how to access and use WCB safety and health regulations; how to conduct safety inspections; and how to conduct and document accident investigations and reports. All course materials are included in tuition.

Supervisor Safety Management

For supervisors who want to increase their ability to manage safety in the workplace and better understand their responsibilities in this area. This course gives you tools you can take back and apply directly to your workplace. Topics include the principles of due diligence, WCB officer functions, risk assessment and control, and effective crew talks. It is recommended that you complete Joint H&S Committee training prior to this course. Course materials are included in tuition.

WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)

Up-to-date WHMIS information required for all who work in trades, custodial, and other workplaces where chemical products are used. Topics include working with and storing controlled products, responsibilities of employers and employees, and how to apply the WHMIS system (revised by WorkSafe in 2015). Students receive a wallet-size "Confirmation of Successful Completion"
