Occupational First Aid Level 1

This 8 hour WCB recognized course covers the essential ABC's - airway, breathing and circulation. Students learn how to deal with obstructed airways and breathing distress, control bleeding, perform CPR, care for minor wounds, and how to complete basic records and reports. Includes using an automated exterior defibrillator (AED).  A 3 year certificate will be issued upon successful completion. Pre-requisites: Students must be at least 16 years of age. Bring government issued photo ID to class to present to instructor.

Back Care & Ergonomics

Does your working environment require you to lift heavy objects, bend frequently, or sit at a desk for extended periods of time? Learn how you can protect your back and prevent other musculoskeletal injuries. Topics include: lifting safely and reducing risks of back injury; using equipment and tools to help do the work; preventing sprains and strains; risk factors for musculoskeletal injuries (MSI); and how to improve posture and reduce stress on your body. For workers, supervisors, and anyone concerned with ergonomics and preventative care.

Ozone Layer Protection Awareness Program (formerly CFC/HCFC/HFC Control)


This 1-day environmental awareness training course, based on Environment Canada's "Code of Practice for Elimination of Fluorocarbon Emissions in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems", deals with environmentally-correct equipment design, proper handling of refrigerants, and will prepare participants for complying with provincial regulations covering refrigeration and air conditioning systems. 
This course is strictly theory and does not incorporate hands-on training. Participants who attend and successfully complete the training will receive an Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) certificate through HRAI. Course materials are included in tuition.

Confined Space Awareness

When there is a confined space in the workplace, all workers in that workplace are required to complete Confined Space Awareness training. This course meets that requirement by introducing the concepts of confined space, identifying potential types of hazards, establishing control measures, and outlining the elements required for a workplace Confined Space program. Tuition includes course materials. Students receive a Confirmation of Completion certificate. Please bring a bag lunch as campus food services are limited on weekends.

Fall Protection

One of the top seven workplace hazards, a fall can have serious consequences! This workshop presents the WCB requirements for fall protection in the construction industry. Topics include planning and application of fall protection systems; types of fall restraining systems; fall arrest systems; and the use of various personal fall protection gear. Course materials are included in the tuition. Wear suitable clothing for wearing harness and bring a bag lunch as campus food services are limited on weekends.

Learn to identify hazards at your workplace, in order to better control or eliminate accidents, injuries and downtime. Integrated Pest Management (Pesticide Certificate)

This course prepares you to write the Ministry of Environment exam for a Pesticide Applicator Certificate (Landscape General or Forestry Management) as you learn Integrated Pest Management (IMP) techniques. Topics include: identifying, monitoring, and deciding on various actions for managing pests; spraying, including the use of organically certified chemicals and other pest management strategies; use of pesticides and relevant legislation; ways to protect human health and minimize risks to the environment; and performing calibrations for pesticide application.Common core educational materials are studied in class, with an overview of materials for Landscape General or Forestry Management exams, which are further covered thorough self-study. Out of class study is required. You have the option to write your Pesticide certificate exam at the last class, or write the exam later on your own, or simply take this course for your own knowledge of pest management techniques. (Exam fee of $90 is payable at time of writing your exam). IMPORTANT: YOU MUST HAVE YOUR STUDY KIT FOR THE FIRST SESSION OF CLASS. Traffic Control (Flagperson Training)

Traffic Controllers are responsible for public and construction traffic safety. Learn about the Industrial Health and Safety regulations and safe positions and procedures in this Government approved training course. Includes both theory and practical field sessions with practical and written exams. Upon successful completion, a three-year certificate will be issued by the BC Construction Safety Alliance. Requirements: Minimum age is 16. Physical participation is required, including lifting and carrying equipment and directing traffic. Students must wear CSA approved construction safety boots with a minimum 6” on the ankle (not a shoe or hiking boot), and bring a government issued photo-ID to show to instructor. A valid driver's license is strongly recommended. Please dress appropriately for working outdoors (rain gear may be needed), and bring a bag lunch as no campus food service available on weekends.
