When apprenticeship welder Mila Puharich talks about her trade, she draws you deep into the physicality of her work, using language that stimulates the senses with vivid descriptions. As she speaks, you can actually hear the snap of the flint and the roar of the cutting torch; feel the heat of the flame and the gut-pounding vibration of metal against anvil; smell the acrid stench of an electric arc to metal. More than anything though, you get the sense that welding is as much a calling for Puharich as it is a career choice. (more...)

At Camosun College, we're on our way to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 1000 tonnes a year by 2012, beating the target of 200 tonnes we set for ourselves at the start of our Energy Management project in 2007. We're ahead of schedule by working with BC Hydro and the provincial government to measure and optimize energy usage on campus, as well as figure out where we can use the latest green technologies to reduce our energy consumption and make our community more sustainable. Board of Governors approves $104M balanced budget08 Mar 2011
The college’s Board of Governors approved a balanced budget for fiscal 2011-2012 at its regular monthly meeting last night. Speaking to the Board of Governors, Chair Lynda Farmer said this year’s budget presented increasing challenges for the college. “The combined effect of three years of flat funding from government has the potential to seriously impact Camosun’s programs, students and our community. We are hopeful that government will respond by renewing their commitment to post-secondary education in British Columbia,” she concluded. (more...)
