Camosun students host Sustainability Day, March 15 – Lansdowne
Camosun students invite you to celebrate the college’s 7th annual Sustainability Day, Thursday, March 15, 10am to 2pm in the Fisher Courtyard, Lansdowne campus.
Hosted by the Camosun Students for Environmental Awareness, the Camosun College Student Society and the goBEYOND Campus Climate Network, the day is a province-wide initiative to share ideas, celebrate achievements and spark solutions for sustainable living.
Event organizer Luke Kozlowski says everyone is welcome to drop by for free food, coffee, interactive games, environmental displays and a chance to win free surf lessons in Tofino!
Several guest speakers and educators will share their expertise about sustainability ideas and issues. Keynote speaker is Guy Dauncey from the BC Sustainable Energy Association.
Camosun’s Ancillary Services will demonstrate their new bike fix-it stations at 1pm outside the Fisher building. The bike fix-it stations, now available at both campuses, make it easy for riders to keep on rolling by providing a basic repair stand, durable air pump and basic tools for maintaining your bike. (Secured bike parking will also soon be available at Lansdowne, as it is at Interurban, for a fee of $5.50 per month).
The college will also highlight its new composting pilot program now at Lansdowne campus. After two years of hard work involving Environmental Technology students and faculty and Physical Resources staff, several green compost bins have been installed in most buildings around campus. All types of food waste including meat, cheese, bread and cooked leftovers can be dropped into these bins. Camosun has hired two students part-time to collect the waste daily and redistribute it into 16 new cone-shaped anaerobic organic waste digesters. Based on the success of this initiative, a similar composting system will be piloted at Interurban during 2012/13. An educational component of these projects will soon be developed to help explain and teach the new composting system at each campus.
Thanks to Camosun’s Sustainability Day supporters: BC Hydro, CRD, Surf Sister, Kelp Reef Kayak, Cycle BC, Jamie’s Whaling Station, Galley Farms, Mitchell Farms and Save-On Foods.
