Gibson Musicales concert series launches Friday, January 27
January 23, 2012
The Music Department of Camosun College, in partnership with the Victoria Conservatory of Music, is pleased to announce the launch of its new concert series, Gibson Musicales. The series features three Friday afternoon concerts of classical and jazz music at the Gibson Auditorium on Camosun’s Lansdowne Campus. Concerts will start at 4pm and take place January 27, February 24 and March 16.
“Camosun has been so open and inviting to its music students, who willingly share their talents with the community at large and help enrich the college culture,” sais Mary Byrne, Chair of the Camosun College Music Department and Director of the Professional School at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.
The 45-minute concerts will feature a range of performers, who will be available to meet the audiences after each performance. “The concerts are a great way to conclude a busy work or school week and start the weekend on a good note,” says Byrne. Admission is free, with donations gratefully accepted.
Challenging repertoire demonstrates a great depth of talent
The Gibson Musicales opening concert presents Stephanie Galipeau (viola, Diploma of Music student of Michael van der Sloot) performing selections from the Sonata by Paul Hindemith and from the Suite no. 3 by J. S. Bach; Mark Bigauskas (piano, Diploma of Music student of Susan de Burgh) performing selections from Sonata no. 1 in f minor, op. 2, by Ludwig van Beethoven and Sonata in d minor by Domenico Scarlatti; Elise Cassidy (cello, Diploma student of Paula Kiffner) performing Orientale by Alexander Glazunov; and Deborah Baynes (composition, Diploma student of Stephen Brown) performing her own composition Echoes.
“Both campuses of Camosun College are fortunate to have a number of beautiful acoustic and aesthetic spaces which beg to be filled with music,” says Byrne. “We are thrilled to be collaborating on this project and we look forward to entertaining more Camosun audiences in the near future.”
