National conference inspires CSEE students
February 3, 2012
The Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (PISE), located on Camosun’s Interurban campus, hosts the 2nd Annual Canadian Strength and Conditioning Conference March 3 & 4. On deck to help with this national event are second-year students from the Exercise and Wellness program, who will gain valuable experience and expand their professional network as they assist with promotions, registration and other duties that accompany a conference of this calibre.
Conference keynote speaker Paula Findlay, whose meteoric rise to the top of the World Championship triathlon rankings earned her a birth in the 2012 London Olympics, will definitely be a highlight for the students and conference delegates. The two-day conference will also feature some of British Columbia’s expert strength coaches, athletic therapists, physiotherapists and nutritionists.
“Helping with a conference of this calibre means our students can apply their knowledge and see first-hand how high performance sport integrates with other professional disciplines, including business, physiology, technology and much more,” says Dr. Peter Rehor, Dean of the Centre for Sport and Exercise Education. “Not only will these students have the chance to interact with internationally renowned athletes and trainers, they will also earn seat time in some of the presentations.”
Other conference sessions include functional training for strength and power, Olympic lifting, progressions in plyometric exercises, debunking sports supplement and nutrition claims, injury prevention and targeted conditioning for enhanced fitness performance. Sunday, March 4 will be Physical Literacy Day with workshops on the Canadian Sport for Life model, practical sessions introducing fundamental movement skills, and best practices in teaching adults and children with a disability.
