Get educated about careers at Camosun’s Student Employment Festival, Sept. 28

Camosun students and alumni are invited to the college’s first-ever Student Employment Festival “One Life, Many Careers” hosted by Camosun’s Student Employment office, Wednesday, September 28 at Lansdowne campus.
“The festival is designed to educate and expose Camosun students and graduates to a variety of career opportunities and to help them discover what it really takes to find that ‘dream job’,” says Camosun Student Employment Facilitator and event coordinator Irene Wallace. “Participants will have a chance to meet one-on-one with experts in their fields, practice their interview skills and have their resumes critiqued by professional employment coaches.”
The Student Employment Festival is free of charge and includes a full day of special guest speakers and fun career-related activities:
Guest speakers
- 9:00am Peter Lawless, civil litigation and sports/recreation lawyer. (Fisher 100)
- 9:45am Renaat Marchand, owner/operator of the Wannawafel Franchise and winner of CBC’s Dragon’s Den show. (Fisher 100)
- 10:30am Chris Burdge (key note), president of bWest Social Media, shares his tips and tricks for building a successful on-line presence. (outside stage)
- 11:15am Baldev Pooni, Camosun VP of Education and Student Services and Gloria Darroch, Director of Co-operative Education and Student Employment offer the official welcome. (outside stage)
- 11:30am Sean Aiken (key note), author of The One Week Job Project, speaks on his journey to discover his passion in 52 weeks (outside stage). Sean will sign his book at 12:30pm in the Fisher Foyer.
- 1:00pm Cathy Noel, event manager for over 25 years and founder of GoBid online auctions shares her experiences in building relationships and partnerships. (Fisher 100)

Festival activities
- Resumania - students can fine-tune their next job application by bringing in their resumes for a professional critique from a resume coach.
- Interview Moments - students can practice their interview skills with one of 22 human resources experts.
- Living Library - students can make an appointment to talk to one of 28 Living Books - real people from many different career and educational backgrounds, to find out what that job it is really like
- Entrepreneurial Talk Show - students will hear four entrepreneurs, including CBC Dragon's Den winner Renaat Marchand, Wannawafel owner, share their unique career experiences
- Dragon’s Den - students can compete for a chance to win $500 in tuition by pitching their best ideas on “how to make Camosun the best it can be” in the Dragon's Den, FAQ . Students must apply by September 22. (Young 216 from 1pm to 3:15pm). Winners announced at 3:15pm. Spectators welcome!
- Community Partners - students can network and explore career opportunities with local businesses and organizations, have their passports stamped and visit the Bookstore for great prizes!
A free noon-hour barbecue will be sponsored by the Camosun College Student Society. Fortune tellers, tarot card readers, games, prizes and improv acts are also part of the day’s fun events which runs from 8:30am to 4:00pm at the Lansdowne campus.
