Camosun hosts international conference on human anatomy and physiology

Camosun College will host the 25th annual Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) conference May 28 through June 1, welcoming more than 400 instructors from post-secondary institutions across North America, and an additional 200 individuals representing industry exhibitors and sponsors. Workshop presenters—with topics ranging from the interdisciplinary study of face transplants, to the integration of cell phone use in class-based learning—are leading-edge faculty and researchers from influential centres across the continent. The ambitious conference agenda features six mainstage speakers, three of whom are local to the Island, and over 100 workshops aimed to improve the teaching of anatomy and physiology.
“Anatomy and physiology instruction is a very specialized teaching area that is foundational to a broad range of health and sport science programs,” says conference chair Peggy Hunter, who teaches at Camosun College. “The students are usually in their first year of college or university and can become overwhelmed by the intricacies of the material they need to learn.” Hunter says the conference delegates are passionate about the subject and, being among the best of the best teachers, have much to share. “HAPS gives instructors access to text book authors, technology, teaching resources and new information to bring to the classroom and lab. Every year delegates come away feeling quite inspired.”
This is the first time the conference has been held in Victoria, and only the third time in Canada. “It’s been exciting putting this together over the past two years. I am so proud to be able to showcase our home-grown research talent in the update lectures and banquet keynote address,” says Hunter. Island presenters include: Camosun College Distinguished alumnus Dr. Brad Nelson (Ted and Joyce Deely Research Centre / BC Cancer Agency, Victoria), Dr. Bayla Schecter (Mental Health and Addictions, VIHA, Victoria), Dr. Ben Sporer (Canadian Sport Centre of the Pacific, Victoria) and Dr. Paul Zehr (Professor of Neuroscience and Kinesiology, UVIC, Victoria and author of the popular book, “Becoming Batman: The Possibility of a Superhero”).
As in all conferences of this calibre, delegates look forward to networking, and industry partners will display an enticing array of teaching aids, technology and reference materials.
With over 1,600 members, the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society aims to enhance the quality of human anatomy and physiology instruction at colleges and universities. The annual conference and other events provide members with a means of updating their knowledge, improving technical and pedagogical skills, and networking with international peers.
