A new and local documentary, “Food Security: it’s in your hands,” asks the question: can we feed the world the way we farm today?
A must see for people interested in food security or small-scale local food production on Vancouver Island, the documentary follows up on local film producer Nick Versteeg's first film on food security, titled "Island on the Edge."
"With prices rising and companies controlling our food supply we need to look at growing part of our own food again and support small scale farming close to where we live. At the same time we have to have a close look at the Business of farming and give young farmers a good foundation to create a successful business model," says Versteeg.
This local film premiered to a sold-out audience at the Victoria Film Festival in February 2011 and is being presented at Camosun as a special screening of Cinema Politica.
Post-film discussion
After the film, Versteeg of DV Cuisine, will lead a post-film discussion. On May 11, he will be joined by representatives from the Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre and Lifecycles Project Society. On May 19, a guest panel will include Steve Walker Duncan, host of Flavours of the West Coast and a culinary arts instructor at Camosun, as well as a local farmer.
This special screening is being sponsored by Camosun’s Office of the Vice President Strategic Development.

This sounds great. I plan to attend.
Wouldn't it be great to have (a) community garden(s) on campus?

Unfortunately I can't attend but I am very interested in this seeing as I am a backyard meat producer ... all local!

This looks like an excellent film, and I can't wait to see it. I worked with Nick on some video projects a few years ago and like his style. The added benefit of having experts to talk about it afterwards is great, thank you!
