Office Administration student made a project of returning to school
Jieny Kung is well on her way toward realizing major career goals, and she’s doing it with Camosun’s help.
A graduate of Camosun’s Office Administration certificate program, Kung is currently an office administrator for Marc Owen-Flood at Newport Realty. The next step? She plans to enrol in Camosun’s Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program, and ultimately use her degree and education in the field of project management.
The first move
Kung and her husband moved to Victoria from Alberta several years ago, looking for life changes. A new city. New friends. And aspirations for a new career. That meant going back to school.
It had been years since she’d been in a classroom. Kung took time to explore educational options before deciding on Camosun. Deciding factors? The variety and flexibility of the college’s programs, plus a helpful approach and attitude from Camosun’s Student Services front-line staff that made Kung feel positive about her choices. As an adult learner, Kung was uncertain of her career path and wanted guidance. “Camosun focused on my needs, how they would be met, and what steps I needed to take toward becoming a project manager,” says Kung.
Camosun hosts monthly information sessions – a great place to hear from instructors and coordinators about program and career options, hiring outcomes and how student and learning success is supported at the college.
After being out of school for more than 15 years, Kung took a deep breath and enrolled in Camosun’s Office Administration certificate program through the Applied Business Technologies (ABT) department in the fall of 2010.
Not only did the program update Kung’s office and computer skills, the full-time Office Administration certificate can be earned in as little as eight months. As a student, Kung also took advantage of opportunities to hone rusty study skills with a Learning Skills class, and gained practical experience through electing to do a co-operative work-term as well.
Practicum experience leads to job success
Although she learned many new skills in the Office Administration program, Kung feels the technical computer skills were the greatest asset. “I’m now competent on all the Office applications,” says Kung. “I felt totally prepared when I started at Newport as an office administrator.”
Kung started at Newport Realty as part of a co-op work term while earning the Office Administration certificate. By completing a work term, Kung gained valuable experience and confidence in her skills. Patricia Gaudreault is the co-operative education facilitator for Office Administration.“As a co-op student, Jieny took on her new position enthusiastically, and learned and thrived as a responsible team member in the ‘real world’ environment,” says Gaudreault.
Kung is grateful that Newport Realty works with Camosun’s Co-operative Education and Student Employment department to provide practical work experience. And now for a rewarding and challenging job! Kung also thanks faculty for assisting her throughout the co-op application and procurement process. “Their support helped me secure this valuable position,” says Kung, “Plus, they gave me the skills and confidence to excel now and in the future.”
Kung plans to continue her education at Camosun and earn a Bachelor in Business Administration. The fourth year of the degree program offers a Project Management course. “I have many interests but I would love to be a project manager,” says Kung. “The project management course and the BBA will be the perfect transition to my final educational goal – I plan to earn a Professional Project Management designation.”
Camosun has inspired Kung in many ways. She feels she received the best education possible. Time with teachers was readily available outside of class, and Camosun staff made her feel welcome. Kung always felt respected and valued as an adult learner.
“It doesn’t matter how old you are or how long you’ve been out of school,” says Kung. “Don’t give up and don’t be afraid to ask for assistance. Camosun will always be here to help.”
The Applied Business Technology department offers three certificate program options and one two-year diploma program.Office Administration program are still available.
