Finishing their two years of study with a flourish, graduates of Camosun's Visual Arts program invite the public to their exhibition, Opinion (18). Visual opinions as diverse as the eighteen students will be at the show opening from 6 to 10pm, April 29, 2011, at Unit #17 in Market Square, 560 Johnson Street.
"I wish I had taken this program – it is so comprehensive," says Joseph Hoh, Chair of the Visual Arts department. "In addition to using more traditional media such as drawing, painting and ceramics, the students get to try things like animation, performance art, print-making, installation, and film."
"We are now aware of more possibilities of what can be done with creative thoughts," says student Chelsea Sundher. "And we know how to use the tools."
The 2011 grad class includes: Courtney Allinson, Jessica Clark, Miles Crawford, Claire Donner, Michaela Earthy-Mousseau, Megan Heenan, Kaitlyn Hendry, Shea Hermanson, Valerie Hosokawa, Lana Larouche, Sara MacDonald, Amanda Marchand, Jordan Nijjar, Kelsey Rounds, Won Seok Seo, Chelsea Sundher, Jessica Tai, and Samantha Todd.
Putting on the show uses skills students need in the professional world of visual arts. More used to feeding off each others' creativity and critique in the class, "it's exciting to be able to pull together our own show, but also exciting that strangers will be looking at our work," says student Kelsey Rounds.
After thirty-nine years, the Visual Arts program is one of the oldest programs at Camosun. About half the graduates are likely to transfer into a variety of fine arts programs in universities across Canada, and others find a variety of visual art career opportunities. Hoh continues to hear about the success of program graduates, most recently, past graduate Leah Selk was hired as the Co-ordinator for the new Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society.
The show continues April 30 to May 5, from 12 to 6pm daily.
