Keeping mental health in check at Camosun

October 8, 2010

Things can feel pretty overwhelming at this time of year, especially when assignment deadlines are looming, friends and family want your attention, and finances are tight. If you are experiencing feelings of depression or anxiety, you are not alone. "These feelings are very common in our college population, and this time of year can be especially challenging," says Chris Balmer of Camosun's Counselling Services department.

Free mental health screening—October 21

You don't need to suffer in silence. Learn about your own mental health at the free screening clinic at Lansdowne (a second clinic at Interurban will take place in January). The clinic is a safe and confidential way assess your current health and talk to a counsellor about the treatment options and services that can help you feel better.

Stand up for mental health comedy show—October 28

The comedy show Stand up for Mental Health comes to Camosun's Lansdowne campus October 28 with a mission to find the funny in a disease that afflicts 20% of Canadians. What's so funny about mental illness? "Well, not much, if you are struggling with symptoms of depression, anxiety or alcohol abuse," says Balmer. "But, the amazing thing about this show is that the comics manage to bust through barriers of public prejudice, stigma and discrimination. What we end up with is an open, frank, compassionate and lively discussion about mental illness—and mental health services—on campus."

The show was so popular last year, Camosun's mental wellness group decided to bring the troupe back for an encore performance. Stand up for Mental Health features local comics who have learned to use their personal experiences to develop riotous and provocative stand-up routines and, in doing so, manage to open hearts and minds.

Everyone is welcome to attend the free show at Lansdowne campus, with a livestream to Interurban.
