Capstone Symposium

After two and a half years of intense studies, Camosun technology grads are now armed with marketable skills and knowledge, and ready to start new careers in the high-tech sector. On June 17, potential employers will be able to meet students who are about to graduate from the Computer Systems Technology and Electronics Engineering Technology - Renewable Energy programs.
Six student teams will be demonstrating their capabilities as they showcase final projects at the Capstone Symposium.
“Capstone matches up tech students who have skills, with local businesses and volunteer organizations who need those skills,” says Saryta Schaerer, chair of Camosun’s computer science department. “The students meet with the clients, assess the problem, and then create a technological solution. The end results will be showcased at the Capstone Symposium.”
At 11am, students and guests will hear from keynote speaker Nolan Zak, president of the Victoria .NET Developers Association. Zak is a software developer with a focus on ASP.NET architecture, design, performance, security, reporting and interoperability. Student presentations follow after lunch at 12:45pm.
The public is welcome to attend the symposium, hear the presentations and talk with the students over a light lunch. There is no charge for admission, but please pre-register online.

Awesome Box Effects
- Team: Scott Bonner, Nadine Haskell, Matt Holland, Greg Webb
- Program: Electronics Engineering Technology – Renewable Energy
- Client: Camosun College department of Electronics & Computer Engineering Technology
Designed for avid guitarists, this multi-effects processor will improve upon products currently in the marketplace. It will feature a seven inch LCD touch screen as the primary user interface, one 1/4 inch guitar input, two 1/4 inch outputs (left and right channels), and a 1/8 inch stereo headphone output. It will be powered by a rechargeable lithium ion battery that can be charged with a 9V DC adapter. A wireless foot pedal will enable the unit to be used while the guitarist plays on stage in a performance setting.
uberfine.com User Interface

This project is a redesign of an existing website’s user interface (uberfine.com). This website creates a location where various data sources can be synchronized so that the user has easy access to them. Examples of data stores which can be synchronized include Facebook, Myspace, local computer files, email contacts, and cell phone data. Currently the website is almost unusable due to its technical and complicated user interface. The client will be able to more effectively attract and retain a client base once the website has been simplified, embellished, and cleaned up.
ExcelSystems Development Mailing List System

- Client: ExcelSystems Development Incorporated (ESDI)
This project focuses on making a mailing list and tracking system for ESDI. By creating a system for user-driven emails that will supplement the existing quarterly newsletter, users will be in control of which emails they receive. ESDI staff will be able to change or add to existing mailing lists and then provide more frequent updates on available company products and features.
Schneider Electric Employee Change Notification Tool (ECNT)

- Client: Schneider Electric
This tool is for notifying employees who are newly hired, departing, or experiencing a job, department, location, or contract change. It gathers the required information, then forwards it to those who will complete required tasks such as adding an employee to a database, or setting up required hardware and software. Additionally, this tool archives all data in a database and allows for comprehensive reporting. By offering one portal for staff to access, the client can cut down on extraneous emails, phone calls and meetings, and if this new system works well in Victoria, it may be incorporated within Schneider Electric offices in other locations.
Theatrical Outdoor Torch

- Client: Anonymous until official “unveiling” in the fall of 2009
Digital Flame Tech has been commissioned by a local client to design an eco-friendly outdoor theatrical torch. The new flame design will use LED (Light-Emitting Diode) technology, projected onto a polished stainless steel sculpture. Unique software will control the LEDs to simulate a flame lighting effect. The finished product will be able to withstand extreme weather conditions and have a lifespan of about 30 years. This new torch design eliminates the harmful carbon emissions produced by conventional gas burning torches.
Rowing Canada Aviron Web Registration System

- Program: Computer Systems Technology
- Client: Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA)
Presently RCA has about 12,000 members but does not have an accurate or comprehensive way of storing membership information. This new web-based membership registration system allows new and current members to register online and pay their fees. RCA, rowing clubs and provincial rowing associations will be able to manage their own membership categories and generate various reports about their members.
