Business students of the Camosun chapter of Delta Epsilon Chi (DEC) are back from California with four awards from the 48th annual International Career Development conference.
Camosun’s DEC chapter sent nine members to Anaheim, California April 22 through April 25 to compete in a combination of individual and team events. Camosun finance instructor, Shari Corrigan, travelled with the student group.
Christopher Paine and Jonathan Gehrts took first place in the prestigious Financial Statement Analysis Competition. In the Entrepreneurship Event, John Sargent was called to the stage as a finalist for his business plan to start a local pizza chain marketing customizable pizzas prepared in under three minutes. Heather Lane and Christopher Paine were each recognized with National Honor Awards for high scholastic achievement and participation in Delta Epsilon Chi Activities.
The Camosun DEC club is less than one year old and the only DEC chapter in Canada west of Manitoba. Christopher Paine is the current DEC Camosun president. Heather Lane is Vice-President-Administration.
"Given the infancy of our club, we were unsure how well we would stack up in an international competition,” says Paine. “Our success just proves we’re getting a first-rate business education at Camosun College.”
More than 1600 students, advisors and judges attended the Anaheim Conference, representing chapters from across the United States and Canada. Students had an opportunity to compete in one of 20 events that are classified as a case study, or business simulation, or prepared business presentation. Events are tied to one of the following areas of study: Management, Marketing and Sales, Accounting and Finance, Hospitality, Design, Travel and Tourism, Business Law and Ethics, Food Service, and Entrepreneurship.
DEC Camosun is a business club which strives to prepare its members for a variety of local and international business related competitions. The club also looks for ways in which they can give back to their college and local communities through promoting and contributing to charitable initiatives like Choices Adoption and Counseling Services, Big Brother and Big Sisters, the student food bank, and the Queen Alexandra Foundation for Children.
DEC Camosun hosted a number of fundraising events throughout the year which helped raise money to cover some travel and registration expenses. The club is extremely grateful for the generous support received from local businesses that contributed to this effort.
