Chargers welcome new men’s basketball head coach
April 7, 2008
Camosun College is pleased to announce the hiring of Craig Price as the new head coach of the Chargers men’s basketball program.
Price most recently worked as the assistant coach of the University of Victoria Vikes men’s basketball program (September 2005 – March 2008). Previously, he was the men’s basketball assistant coach to the SAIT Trojans, the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Rams and the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.
Coach Price has an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology from the University of Lethbridge and is currently attending the University of Victoria working towards a Masters of Education in Coaching Studies. He is a fully certified NCCP Level IV coach.
“We found Craig’s education, experience with the University of Victoria Vikes and work within the Canadian Interuniversity Sport and the Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Association highly impressive,” reported Camosun College Recreation and Athletics Coordinator Graham Matthews.
“We also liked Craig’s coaching philosophy, which focused on teaching young athletes to be better people on and off the court using attributes such as determination, commitment, self-discipline and a willingness to make sacrifices in order to achieve success,” added Matthews.
In his new role as head coach, Price will be responsible for the overall development of the men’s basketball program with a strong emphasis on recruiting.
Having built a diverse network of recruiting contacts throughout Western Canada and Northern Montana, Coach Price is confident that he will be successful in developing a top level recruiting program and attracting talented athletes particularly from Vancouver Island.
“My goal is to keep the local talent at home and I’m committed to recruiting the highest quality student-athletes to the program,” Price stated. “Our recruiting base will always begin on Vancouver Island. Our first steps will be to identify the local talent as early as possible and form a relationship with the athletes so we can assist them in realizing their personal, academic and athletic goals.”
There’s no doubt that Price will have big shoes to fill, taking over the reigns of the program from former head coach Gord Thatcher, but Matthews is confident that the program will only grow.
“Gord brought the program to new heights and leaves behind him a very solid and successful legacy. We are looking to Craig to build upon that foundation and to take the program to an even higher level,” he said.
