Chargers kick off 07-08 season with Island Challenge

October 30, 2007

The Camosun College Chargers basketball and volleyball teams kick off the 2007-08 British Columbia Colleges' Athletic Association (BCCAA) season with the first-ever Island Challenge against arch rivals, the Malaspina Mariners, this weekend at St. Margaret's School (1080 Lucas Avenue). The Island Challenge is a joint initiative between the Camosun Chargers Athletics department and the new School of Sport Education. Dr. Alex Carre, Chair of the Sport Management Program is excited about the initiative.

"We have 30 students involved in this project in areas ranging from promotions to special events. The hands-on experience they will gain from this experience will definitely serve to enrich their education," replied Dr. Carre.

In addition to competing on the court, the Chargers have challenged the Mariners to an all-out battle for the title, "Best Fans on the Island", where points will be awarded to each school for game wins, fan attendance, spirit and support. In an effort to put their competitive spirit to a good cause, Camosun's Sport Management students have invited the Mustard Seed Food Bank to participate in one of their Island Challenge contests.

"We're very excited and enthusiastic about the Challenge and making a real difference to those who need it," exclaimed Jordan Mottl, Sport Management student and Chargers Men's Basketball Assistant Coach. "Our goal is to create fan support for the Chargers as well as a sense of school spirit within Camosun, while doing something good for the community."

The Chargers basketball teams tip off against the Mariners on Friday, November 2. Women play at 6:30pm, men at 8:15pm. Between games, the Chargers will hold a banner raising ceremony for the Chargers Men's Golf team who captured the BCCAA Golf Championship last weekend.

On Saturday, November 3, the Chargers women's and men's volleyball teams hit the court at 6:00pm and 7:45pm respectively. Between the two matches, Camosun College President, Dr. Liz Ashton and Vice President of Education and Student Services, Baldev Pooni will make a special presentation to eight Camosun student-athletes who will be receiving the 2006-07 Canadian Colleges' Athletic Association National Scholar Award.
