Skills Assessment and E-Training in Canada's Grocery Retail Sector
In partnership with the Canadian Grocery Human Resources Council (CGHRC), Camosun College is developing a suite of online essential skills training materials, specific to the grocery retail sector. The suite of training tools will address an individual's essential skills gaps related to the tasks identified in four common front-line occupations: Deli Clerk, Floral Clerk, Retail Meat Cutter and In-Store Baker. Funding provided by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, the Office of Literacy and Essential Skills.
BC Post-Secondary Institute for Leadership and Management Development
Since 2004, operating as a consortium, Camosun College, Royal Roads University and the University of Victoria, have provided innovative, flexible and high-quality leadership training specifically designed to enhance the skills of public service managers and senior leaders. Program offerings include multi-day courses and shorter targeted workshops. Consortium responsibilities have included program design, facilitator training, course registration, multi-layer evaluation, and wrap around secretariat services. Funding provided by the BC Pubic Service Agency.
Developing a National Framework for Essentials Skills
Employability and advanced skill level go hand-in-hand. In partnership with the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC), a network of colleges and institutes across Canada are building a framework to engage employers and the broader community in the critical work of increasingly employability by raising skill levels. Camosun is a member of the specialists' team and provides research, instructional design and communications expertise to the project. Funding provided by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.
BC FOODSAFE Secretariat
Camosun College manages the BC FOODSAFE Secretariat on behalf of the BC Ministry of Advanced Education. The work of the Secretariat includes curriculum development and revision; product preparation, distribution and licensing; financial management; information services; marketing and promotions; and support for the Steering Committees and project teams. Recent projects have included the development and maintenance of EatSmartBC, a consumer food safety and healthy eating information site; and the development of MarketSafe, a food safety training program for farmers' market vendors and managers. MarketSafe won the 2010 Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors Alexander Officer Award for outstanding and meritorious achievements in the field of public health.
Employment Skills Access Program
The Employment Skills Access Program (ESA) supports unemployed individuals who are non-EI clients to strengthen job-specific skills. The ESA initiative focuses on groups that are under-represented in the labour market including immigrants, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, youth, older workers and previously self-employed persons. The program is delivered by the BC Public Post-Secondary Labour Market Consortium of Colleges and Universities in British Columbia. Funding provided through the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Agreement.
E-Work: Online English Training for the Workplace
E-Work is an online program designed and delivered by Camosun College to improve language proficiency for new Canadians in the workplace. The first pilot was organized around 21 self-paced courses that dealt with workplace topics such as small talk, customer service, meetings, presentations, and telephone conversations. In the second pilot now underway, the courses were revised to encourage more language production and peer interaction; design changes that are resulting in improved completion rates. Funding provided by the BC Ministry of Advanced Education.
DND Naval Training
Since 1997, Camosun College has delivered custom training for the Department of National Defence stationed at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt. This highly successful contract, currently provides training in the academic phase for four different programs in electronics-related disciplines. Program length ranges from three weeks to nine months and is consistently well received by the client. Our modern lab facilities enable topics from fiber termination, PLCs, through to DSP and motor controls to be taught in an effective setting by faculty with real world industrial experience. Funding provided by the Government of Canada, Department of National Defence.
E-PPRENTICE Cook Program
In 2009, the Industry Training Authority (ITA) selected Camosun College to develop and pilot the provincial E-PPRENTICE Cook program. This program combines three levels of technical training of the Professional Cook Program delivered online with the required Work Based Training after which apprentices complete the Red Seal Certification. Using Camosun's blended delivery model, apprentices are supported by their sponsor in the workplace, their instructor via an online course, and other apprentices in their cohort, throughout their apprenticeship program. The flexibility of the program means that cooks who might otherwise not attain training and certification can now achieve these milestones. Funding provided by the Industry Training Authority.
Trades and Apprenticeship Foundational Skills Program (TAFSP)
The Camosun TAFSP is an original pilot project that blends apprenticeship and foundation course outcomes in a single 12-week program. The program offers participants credited and non-credit course options to facilitate eligibility into a range of community-based funding agencies. Courses are offered modularly from a wide range of trades options including green trades, pipe, metal, marine, construction and service trades, combined with health and safety and integrated essential skill development. TAFSP graduates can transition directly into further Foundation and apprenticeship training, academic upgrading or employment.
