More buses put on to relieve lineups

Posted Fri, 23 Mar 2012

Fewer riders will be left behind by packed buses this year, after an extra 5,000 hours of bus service was approved Thursday. The Victoria Regional Transit Commission dipped into reserve cash to provide the additional buses, while freezing fares and transit taxes. HandyDart, whose riders often have to wait two weeks for service, will see an extra 2,000 hours on the road. About $319,000 from reserves will pay for the return of 7,000 hours cut from last year’s budget. The money will pay for service to help eliminate pass-ups, when riders are left behind because buses are too full. Transit staff are looking at additional runs during peak hours on peak days for several routes, including the No. 4, No. 39 and No. 21, where passengers are regularly left at the curb. The routes largely serve students attending Camosun College and the University of Victoria, said Transit spokeswoman Meribeth Burton. Green Your World: Holistic resolutions

Posted Thu, 19 Jan 2012

January 10, 2012 by Luke Kozlowski, Camosun Students for Environmental Awareness Another year, another post-holiday shame-spiral induced by feasting and partying. Sure, you could hit the gym, but in the event that this resolution has failed in the past, consider some green pledges for 2012. What better way to trim the fat than by hopping on a bike? Local bike collective Recyclistas would be happy to set you up with an affordable steed. Then, since you’re likely on an alcohol fast, do yourself a favour and spend a little more of that student loan on some rain gear and bike lights. Your future children will thank you for it. Live too far from school? Bike halfway, then take a bus, or vice-versa. After all, that is why they have those racks on the front of the bus. Why not save yourself the stress of dealing with traffic, as well as reduce parking expenses, tighten that flab, and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions?

Two-wheel transport speeds ahead on campus

Posted Wed, 30 Nov 2011

If you were to design the perfect bicycling environment, it would include safe, well-maintained and lit streets. It would have almost no car traffic, dedicated bike paths and ample secure parking and storage. It might even have showers purpose-built for sweaty commuters and a well-equipped repair shop where cyclists can get help fixing a flat tire. In short, it would look quite a bit like the campus of McMaster University. Read more online Maclean's Magazine: http://oncampus.macleans.ca/education/2011/11/07/canadas-best-cycling-schools/

The first nationwide count of parking spaces demonstrates their high environmental cost. Light rapid transit railcars or buses could run in exclusive lanes on the east side of Douglas Street into downtown under a plan endorsed by Victoria councillors Thursday.
