Each year the Camosun Foundation promotes three special awards recognizing excellence in leadership among Camosun students: the Executive Network/Donald Family Leadership Award; the Leadership in African Awareness Award; and, the Peter and Muriel Mixon Animal Rights Award.

This year BBA Marketing and Communications student Avery Graham receives the $600 Executive Network/Donald Family Leadership Award for overcoming tremendous challenges in her life, persevering, excelling in her studies and demonstrating outstanding leadership to others. Avery made the Dean’s Honour Roll this winter and showed exceptional mentorship to others in her life, despite personal circumstances. The Walter Donald Family established this annual award in 1998 in memory of their grandfather, William, to recognize leadership ‘despite the odds.’

Second-year student Tabitha Foulkes receives this year’s $500 Leadership in African Awareness Award created by the College’s African Awareness Committee. The award is given out annually to recognize the volunteer work of a student who has demonstrated leadership and a strong commitment to raising awareness about the achievements and issues in Africa. Tabitha has volunteered on Camosun’s African Awareness Committee since 2008 working on many projects including helping send bicycles to AIDS workers in Sub-Saharan Africa, organizing a three-day film and speaker festival, coordinating volunteers, helping with fundraisers and co-chairing the committee.

University transfer sciences student Kristin Zajaczkowski receives the Peter and Muriel Mixon Animal Rights Award for the second consecutive year. The 27-year-old student earns the $700 award created by Dr. Peter Mixon, a retired Camosun English literature instructor, in honour of his wife. The award is intended to raise awareness of the plight of animals and encourage a change in attitude toward animals used in research and the treatment of animals in our community. Kristin is a passionate animal welfare advocate. Over the last year she has volunteered at Wild Arc, coordinated a free veterinary clinic for homeless and low income families, participated in the initial rabbit spay and neuter clinic at UVic and fostered several orphaned animals herself. Kristin plans to transfer to University of Saskatchewan’s Veterinary Medicine program and become veterinarian for Victoria’s Philanthropic Veterinary Clinic.

“On behalf of the Foundation we congratulate Avery, Tabitha and Kristin on their exceptional accomplishments this year and wish them much success in their future endeavours,” says Susan Haddon, executive director of the Camosun Foundation.
