Africa Awareness Committee is open to all Camosun students and employees. The mission is to promote awareness of Africa’s development, to support community development in Africa and to develop educational and curriculum materials for understanding Africa.

Camosun Counselling Department has professional counsellors trained to provide emotional support to students.

Camosun College International provides extensive information for those interested in becoming International students at the college and for current International students there is a wealth of links to college and community cultural activities.

Various clubs on campus have something to offer to a diverse range of interests such as Saudi Student Association, Japanese Conversation Club, Mature Student Networking Club, Sunago Christian Community to name just a few of the diverse clubs on campus. It provides links to Victoria region diversity clubs.

Diversity calendar provides “hello” greetings in over 100 languages as well as country by country holidays and religious dates.

First Nations Student Association (FNSA) is run by and for Aboriginal students at Camosun College. It can provide a comfortable place for students to go. FNSA’s mandate is to meet the social, cultural, and recreational needs of Aboriginal students.

Growing your community:

Peer Connections Program helps international students with the challenges they experience, such as living in a new culture, feeling homesick and adjustment to college life. Peer Connections students provide support to international students in one-on-one or small group meetings. They are trained in confidentiality and helping skills. Phone: 250–370–3585.

Pride Centre is dedicated to providing and creating a safe and supportive environment for members of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Two-Spirited and Queer (GLBT2Q) community and their Allies on campus. Phone:(250)370-3429, pride@camosunstudent.org

Women’s Centres at Lansdowne (RH 102) and Interurban (CC 133) offer resources and referrals for women needing a safe place to be. Pride Collective at Lansdowne (F 114) and Interurban (CC 133) creates a supportive, social setting for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and two-spirited students. Interested in taking a course related to Diversity? Try the following:

PSYC 257 Intercultural Communication: Students develop an awareness and competence in effective communication in culturally diverse settings. Topics include: theories of culture and diversity, verbal and nonverbal intercultural communication, prejudice, discrimination, ethnocentrism and adapting to new cultures. Competence and practice in intercultural communication skills are emphasized.

PSYC 288 Cultural Psychology: This course examines various relationships between psychology and culture. Topics covered range from research methods and foundations to the cultural construction of self and identity, through various applied areas of cultural psychology including: language, thought and emotion in cultural context, development, mythology, health, clinical disorders, inter-group relations and social policy.
