Trisha Rennie Athletic & Exercise Therapy Grad, Certified Exercise Physiologist - VERC
"I'm using art and science to relieve people's pain."
Trisha Rennie grew up playing every sport under the sun in the Cowichan Valley but is humble when asked about her skill level. "I can run and I can catch a ball, just don't ask me to do it at the same time," says Trisha. Her passion for physical activity, wellness and helping people led her to consider a career in sport and exercise wellness but it was an accident in 2005 that prompted Trish's interest in athletic therapy. "The recovery process intrigued me and made me want to become a better therapist," says Trisha.
She came to Camosun to take the Bachelor of Athletic and Exercise Therapy program. She found it hard work but enjoyable, like training for a spot on the podium. Trisha explains, "There's a quote by Aristotle outside one of our classrooms that reads, 'We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.' Our instructors trained us to never fall short of excellence, whether personally or professionally."
These days Trisha is working for Victoria Exercise and Rehabilitation Centre and loves it. "I work with a great team and within that team I have the ability to make my own decisions and be my own boss," says Trisha. "It's a combination of art and science. As a therapist, I have the ability and knowledge to take away someone's pain. In some cases, this gives them their life back, it's extremely rewarding."
What's next for Trisha? "Professionally, I aim to continue growing the practice of athletic therapy in BC. It's still a relatively new discipline which makes it both exciting and challenging. Also, I want to have a sustainable exercise and education program for cancer survivors in Victoria within the next 5 years."
