Na’tsa’maht: Camosun officially opens the new Aboriginal Gathering Place

It’s official. Camosun’s newest building – resembling a huge cedar hat and perched on top of the slope overlooking Lansdowne Road – has been named Na’tsa’maht. This Salish phrase, announced at the grand opening ceremony on April 19, means "unity" or "working together as one".

BC Aboriginal Student Award—May 16 deadline

Looking for some financial help to continue your studies? Apply before May 16 for the BC Aboriginal Student Award. Awards of $1,000 - $3,500 will be granted to Aboriginal students enrolled in full-time post-secondary studies of at least 9 weeks long. You could be one of them! Talk to an Aboriginal Advisor.
Indigenous Tourism Perspectives course at Camosun gets to the relational heart of community tourism planning

All Tourism Management students at Camosun take Indigenous Tourism Perspectives as part of the curriculum. This past winter, instructors used role-playing as a learning tool to surprising and successful effect. Each of the 16 students was assigned various roles including First Nations chiefs, destination marketing organization staff, Parks Canada representatives and local business owners.

The idea of coming to Camosun can feel a bit overwhelming, especially if you are uncertain about your readiness for college. To help smooth the transition to post-secondary for Aboriginal learners, Camosun offers an innovative program to prepare for rewarding careers in community. The Indigenous Human Services Career Access Program provides support services in combination with career exploration and college upgrading, all within an Indigenous cultural context.

5 Camosun Aboriginal students win Irving K. Barber BC Scholarship Society Awards

Congratulations to Métis and Nuu-Chah-Nulth students–Katherine Boucher (BS Nursing 1st year), Kelsey Campbell (UT 1st year), Laura McDonald (BS Nursing 2nd year), Mathew Rosenthal (Civil Engineering 1st year), and Clarissa Sawatsky (UT 2nd year)! They have been selected to receive a 2010 Irving K. Barber Scholarship.
Indigenous Family Support graduate wins BC Lt. Governor Silver Medal Award

Receiving the prestigious BC Lt. Governor Silver Medal Award this year is Michele Spencer, a recent graduate of Camosun College’s Indigenous Family Support program . Michelle achieved a remarkable, 8.78 grade point average (out of a possible 9) in her program, in addition to connecting in a special way to her Aboriginal culture.

Justice Murray Sinclair (Ojibway) is the chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In his presentation, Hidden Legacy: Survivors of Survivors—What Do We Do for Them?, he will discuss the intergenerational impact of the Indian residential schools. His Honour is Manitoba’s first Aboriginal judge, a National Aboriginal Achievement Award recipient, and an adjunct professor at the University of Manitoba. Camosun receives $54,000 for Aboriginal youth computer science project

Camosun College is one of 51 organizations across Canada to receive funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), as part of the PromoScience funding aimed at inspiring young people to choose careers in science and engineering. The grant provides $18,000 in each of three years to support development of the ANCEStor project.
Healing Perspectives wins outstanding achievement award

Healing perspectives, a weekly radio show that airs on Camosun's radio station, CKMO, has won the Outstanding Achievement Award in the Aboriginal Affairs and Cultural programming category. The National Campus and Community Radio Association (NCRA) announced the award on June 11, 2010.
New Aboriginal Gathering Place opening Fall 2010

Construction is progressing through the summer on a new gathering place for Aboriginal students and communities. The Salish-inspired structure will have a unique open design inspired by Lekwungen Elder, Mr. Butch Dick, and developed by Brad Shuya Architect Inc. It will link to the external environment and has a fire-pit suitable for small gatherings and Aboriginal ceremonies.

Artist, carpenter, storyteller, and Camosun graduate, Arthur Vickers is a renowned contemporary First Nations artist and recipient of the Spring 2010 Camosun College Distuished Alumni Award.
Spring Graduation Ceremony—June 18, 2010

On a beautiful spring day, Camosun hosted a graduation ceremony at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence on the Interurban campus. Approximately 1700 grads, guests, faculty, and staff gathered to celebrate this important student milestone. For some of our Aboriginal students, this ceremony is a stepping stone to further educational programs a Camosun and beyond. For others, it is the final step before embarking on careers in local communities.
